PDP matches to court ahead of Edo LG polls

The Edo State chapter of the PDP says it has gone to court to challenge the amendment made by the state House of Assembly abridging the mandatory 90 days notice for polls by the constitution in the conduct of local government elections in the state.
The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) had last week fixed February 3 for the conduct of the local government election in the state.
Addressing journalists in Benin, yesterday, the state PDP chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, said the notice given by EDSIEC fell short of the 90 days required by the constitution.
“We want the court to decide whether the State House of Assembly can validly amend the Local Government Law to bridge the time on notice of poll stated in Section 30(1) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, having regards to paragraphs 11 and 12 of part 2 schedule of the 1999  Constitution as amended,” he said.
Reacting, the publicity secretary of the APC in the state, Chris Azebamwan, said the PDP was afraid of failure.
