Usyk wins on a majority decision

In a WBC and WBO cruiserweight unification fight and World Boxing Super Series semifinal, WBO champion Aleksandr Usyk won on a majority 12-round points decision over WBC champion Mairis Briedis at the Riga Arena in Riga, Latvia on Saturday night.
The scores were 115-113 twice and 114-114.
Usyk used his southpaw right jab early in the fight but Briedis came back to score with some shots to the head in an evenly contested fight throughout.
An accidental clash of heads in the third round bruised Usyk’s face and he bled from the mouth later in the fight.
Briedis’s eye was badly swollen in the eleventh round but after an inspection by referee Kenny Bayless he let the fight continue.
Usyk finished strongly and did just enough to take the decision.
Usyk improved his record to 14-0; 11 and Briedis’s record dropped to 23-1; 18.
On the undercard 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Filipi Hrgovic, 3-0; 3, stopped Tom Little, 10-5; 3, in the fourth round of a fight scheduled for eight.
